Week One as a Sales and Marketing Degree Apprentice: A Soft Launch

This week marked the beginning of something new.

My first week as a marketing degree apprentice at The ONE Group and my first proper step into the marketing world. I’d describe it as a soft launch into real working life: equal parts exciting, overwhelming, and rewarding.

First Impressions

Walking into the office on Monday, I felt a mixture of nerves and curiosity. Everyone was welcoming, and the energy felt genuinely collaborative. After getting set up with my laptop, logins, and introductions, I headed out with Leanne, the Group Marketing & Communications Manager to visit some of our future event venues. It was an exciting way to start the week getting a firsthand look at the spaces we could be potentially using and understanding how venue choice impacts event planning.

One of the early challenges? Figuring out how the office flows and finding the confidence to be myself while still feeling a little shy. It takes time to settle in... but with each conversation, it’s getting easier.

Small Wins & Slight Mishaps

By midweek, I’d started to find my rhythm. I worked through my onboarding checklist, had great intro chats with people across the business, and created my first Canva asset, a small win, but one I was definitely proud of. On Tuesday and Wednesday, I also had the chance to assist with running LinkedIn Live sessions, which was a great opportunity to observe content creation from behind the scenes and better understand how digital brand engagement is managed at TOG.

Of course, no first week is complete without a small mishap: I accidentally introduced myself back as Marc to the commercial director… whose name is Marc. A moment that now lives rent-free in my mind.

Getting Comfortable (Sort of)

The week also included a mix of planning and hands-on experience. I helped with early preparations for upcoming HR, Marketing, and Charity events, including contributing ideas and getting a feel for how different departments work together. We also had a TOG rounders game on Thursday; sunshine, laughs, and a great way to meet people from across the company in a relaxed setting. It definitely helped me feel more connected and a little less “new.” Friday was my first work-from-home day, and I was surprised by how focused and productive it felt. No commute, fewer distractions, and the space to really reflect on everything I’d learned.

The Takeaway

In just five days, I’ve gained insight into what it means to be part of a fast-paced marketing team. I’ve learned the value of asking questions, staying adaptable, and giving myself space to grow.

A huge thank you to Leanne Davidson-Town and the Northampton team for such a warm and supportive introduction. I genuinely felt encouraged, included, and part of something purposeful right from the start. It’s early days, but it already feels like the right place to grow and I’m excited to see where this journey leads.
